Heel Pain

One million runners will develop heel pain every year. Heel pain is experienced by millions of Americans each year and can have many causes, including an abnormal walking gait, injury, or bruises incurred when running, walking, or jumping on hard surfaces. Pain in the back of the heel is usually linked with Achilles tendinitis. Achilles tendinitis is when the Achilles tendon is inflamed. Continual running or walking can cause a tightened tendon.

Other typical causes of heel pain are as follows:

  • Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and gout
  • Neuromas or other soft-tissue growths
  • Bone enlargement at the back of the heel bone known as Haglund’s deformity
  • Bruising of the heel bone

Visiting a podiatrist is recommended when heel pain is experienced. Most heel pain can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication, exercise, or orthotic devices. Surgery typically is not needed, but can be used as a last resort.
